The R. W. Mann Trust an endowed grant making Charitable Trust. A Guide for Applicants.

The Trust has a preference for supporting organisations operating in the North Tyneside and in the east Newcastle areas. In certain circumstances the Trust may look at assisting other organisations in the wider Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland areas if they consider that they offer exceptional added value to their local communities or are particularly innovative. Support to national organisations e.g. NSPCC, Weston Spirit, and Fairbridge etc., will only be given where there is a specific project, or ongoing work being carried out, in the area in which the Trust operates.

The Trust will give priority to projects and groups which:

  • Operate in North Tyneside and East Newcastle
  • Are locally run and led
  • Help people with the greatest need
  • Involve disadvantaged and minority groups
  • Use volunteers as much as possible
  • Improve the quality of life in their community
  • Are registered charities or if not a registered charity is exempt such as scouts, schools, hospitals etc. Where a volunteer group or organisation is not registered it should provide details of one which is prepared to accept and administer the grant on their behalf

The Trust will not support:

  • Large well- established national charities
  • Individuals
  • Church buildings except where they are used for community groups
  • Projects or groups which can attract public funds or which appeal to Community Fund grants or national charitable trusts or other sources except if there is a particular part of the project which other sources would be unlikely to fund
  • Deficits already incurred or to replace statutory funding

Making an application

The Trustees meet monthly. Applicants will usually hear if their application has been successful within two months.

In assessing applications the Trust tries to make the process as simple as possible. We do however require the information outlined in the basic application form.

When applying for a grant you should provide as much detail as will help the Trustees evaluate the worthiness of your project.

Where possible you should include:

  • Brief details of the aims of your organisation and how you are organised or managed
  • Your registered charity number where applicable or a registered charity which will accept the grant on your behalf
  • Outline of the project, its aims and intended outcomes where appropriate
  • Whom the project will help - how many people are involved and how they will benefit.
  • How much you need and how you are planning to raise any remainder required (if any)
  • Any other funder to whom you have applied for a grant
  • Details of funding raised or committed to date and steps taken to raise the balance other than from the R. W. Mann Trust
  • Your most recent accounts if available and any recent report which is helpful in assessing your application.
  • Any other information you think will assist the Trustees.

On receipt of your application it may be that we will wish to contact you to arrange a visit or to ask for further information.

Applications are usually considered monthly and you should know if you are successful or not within two months maximum. If you are successful cheques are issued within one week of the Trustees' meeting

We do reserve the right to refuse any appeal without giving reasons. The Trustees may also amend their grant guidelines at any time.
