The R W Mann Trust was founded by Dr. R. W. Mann OBE, DCL and his wife Margery in 1957 by a gift of shares from Victor Products (Wallsend) Ltd.
Reg Mann was born in Birmingham in 1898 and moved to Tyneside in 1920, with his wife Margery, after serving in the Royal Navy during the Great War. He was one of the most distinguished of modern Tyneside industrialists. In the inter-war years he was one of the founders of a small company engaged in the design and sale of mining equipment, an enterprise which later blossomed into much greater eminence as Victor Products Ltd., a Wallsend based firm with an acknowledged international reputation in its chosen field of engineering.
In 1955 Victor Products became a public company and in 1957 Mr Mann and his wife Margery made a gift of shares to form the R W Mann Trust since when grants totalling over £4 million have been made, mainly in the catchment area of the Victor Product’s workforce.
In 1958 Reg Mann was awarded the OBE for services to industry and in 1983 he was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by Newcastle University.
Reg died in 1991 and his wife Margery in 1998. The Trust is still managed by the family.
